Many new services enter the market of real-time search currently. One of its latest contender is Collecta. Its CEO Gerry Campbell was also an investor for Summize, the search company acquired by Twitter.
What makes Collecta really fast is the use of XMPP instant messaging protocol, which Google also uses for its communication and collaboration tool Wave. Campbell estimates that 20% of all searches are somehow timecritical.
Will Twitter's real-time search pose a threat to Google? As long as Google has not (really?) integrated real-time search now we need some helper apps to search Twitter simulteanously: MT Hacks.com offers a JavaScript function which requires Greasemonkey to be added to your Firefox.
Other real-time search engines include: OneRiot, Scoopler, Tweetmeme.
