Bits | New York Times :: Before Facebook, Twitter, Google — even before the Web — there was The Well, an online discussion community founded in Northern California in 1985 that became home to the early denizens of what used to be called cyberspace. Now it looks like the current owner of The Well, the Internet publisher Salon Media Group, is stepping up efforts to unload it. In a filing with securities regulators on Friday, Salon said it had laid off the staff of The Well and was looking for a buyer for the property.
