If you think you can read this book to learn, you're wrong. Unfortunately this lesson won't have a fixed start and end date. You love writing? That's great, but honestly it won't be sufficient. Here's why you won't win, if you're reluctant to "spend time exploring something that doesn't have an explicit or immediate payoff," and it is also a first answer to how to teach j-students if the instruction manual is missing:

But the reality of American education in 2012 is that if the teacher is not going to grade an assignment, the student will not do it. Unless, of course, they must do it under the teacher’s nose, during class.
