Two journalists reportedly wounded in Syria yesterday

International Press Institute :: An Al Jazeera correspondent has reportedly been wounded in Syria and transferred to Turkey for medical treatment, while a Turkish photojournalist was reportedly shot in the foot. Both journalists were injured while covering clashes in Aleppo, the commercial capital of Syria, which has witnessed brutal fighting in recent days.

How do you tell when the news is biased? It depends on how you see yourself

Niemanlab :: At the University of Michigan, William Youmans and Katie Brown showed the same Al Jazeera English news clip to American audiences, but with a catch: Half saw the news with its original Al Jazeera logo intact, and half saw the same video with a CNN logo instead. Viewers who saw the story with the original Al Jazeera logo rated Al Jazeera as more biased than before they had seen the clip. But people who watched the same footage with the fake CNN logo on it rated CNN as less biased than before!

[Jonathan Stray:] Many people have tried to define what media bias is, and attempted to measure it, but I want to try to answer a different question here: not how we can decide if the news is biased, but how each of us actually does decide — and what it means for journalists.

Livestation: Keeping live video news "fresh" by time shifting on the web

Beet.TV :: Livestation, an aggregation site for linnear satellite and cable news channels, has introduced a means to "time shift" viewing in a sort of DVR-type scenario, explains Lippe Oosterhof of the London-based company. Earlier this month, the company announced that this utility to view and share "live" video would be used for the Al Jazeera English language Web site.

Why China ejected Al Jazeera correspondent Melissa Chan

Columbia Journalism Review :: Is this the kind of reporting that got Al Jazeera correspondent Melissa Chan expelled from China last week? The foreign ministry did not give an official reason for the first expulsion of a journalist in 15 years, except to say that “the media concerned know in their heart what they did wrong.” Chan’s probe into “black jails”—detention centers where whistleblowers are often held without charges—was only one of several probing stories that she had done. Peter Chovanec, a professor at Tshingua University who knows Chan well, says, “She wasn’t trying to make China look bad, although sometimes the truth wasn’t pretty.”

Citizen journalist Mohammed Abdelmawla al-Hariri sentenced to death for Al-Jazeera interview

Reporters Without Borders :: Reporters Without Borders is shocked to learn of the death sentence passed today on the citizen journalist Mohammed Abdelmawla al-Hariri for “high treason and contacts with foreign parties”. He was arrested on 16 April just after giving an interview to the television station Al-Jazeera about the situation in his hometown of Deraa.

This was not the first time I heard about wiretaps in Libya. Gaddafi's state television had aired phone conversations between Mustafa Abdel Jalil and Western officials. The opposition, too, published a few dozen of them just after the fall of Tripoli - a way to keep the momentum going, since Gaddafi was still on the run. So I confidently said that I'd already heard them. "No, no," my contact said. "This is different."

Al Jazeera closes Beijing bureau after authorities refuse to renew correspondent's press credentials and visa

Al Jazeera :: Al Jazeera English has had to close its bureau in Beijing after the Chinese authorities refused to renew Melissa Chan's, its correspondent's press credentials and visa or allow a replacement journalist. The channel has expressed its disappointment in the situation and said it is continuing to request a presence in China. It has been requesting additional visas for correspondents for some time through the normal procedures but these have not been issued.

As the New York Times article states officials were said by some to have been angered by an English-language documentary on Chinese re-education through labor (勞動教養) camps: "Prison slaves: China is the world's factory, but does a dark secret lurk behind this apparent success story?"
