London 2012: BBC's and NHK's Super Hi-Vision television test

New York Times :: London Olympics have provided a variety of television “firsts.” The last such Games, in 1948, were the first to be televised to people’s homes, for example. This time, the BBC and NHK, the Japanese public broadcaster, are testing a new technology — so-called Super Hi-Vision television, which they describe as providing 16 times the resolution of conventional high-definition television.

In Olympics outburst: Chinese celeb posts personal info of US swim official on Weibo

Tech In Asia :: Ah, the Olympics. Uniting nations in mutual distrust and nationalist, self-righteous anger for over a century. And so it came to pass this morning that one of China’s leading tech luminaries, Li Kaifu – former Google China head – posted a small graphic to his 15 million Sina Weibo followers containing personal info about John Leonard, the US swim official who first voiced doubts about the gold medal performance of Chinese swimmer Ye Shiwen.

How digital will the London Olympics be?

eMarketer :: More than 4 billion people are expected to watch the London Olympics. With video content migrating rapidly to non-TV platforms, it’s likely that at least 1 billion will view events, get updates and check results on digital devices, including PCs, mobile phones and tablets. Billions more will follow and discuss the action on social media.

Twitter's London Olympic games: Athletes will wear Twitter handles on their bibs

ABC15.com :: Users sent 13,684 tweets per second during a Champions League soccer match between Barcelona and Chelsea in April, a record volume of tweets for a sporting event -- busier even than the 2012 Super Bowl. Chances are good that will be one of the records broken in London. "It could be the 100-meter final or something unexpected," said Lewis Wiltshire, Twitter U.K.'s head of sport. At the last Summer Olympics in Beijing in 2008, Twitter had about 6 million users and Facebook 100 million. Today, the figure is 140 million for Twitter and 900 million for Facebook.

London Olympics to visitors: No public sharing on social media please!

It's about money, about license costs and such things. The question is: how to control that? Do all visitors have to hand over their smartphones?

TechCrunch :: Don’t copy that pole vault! According to the London 2012 Olympic “conditions for ticket holders,” you are not allowed to take pictures or video of the events nor are you allowed to “exploit” any video on social networks.

Images, video and sound recordings of the Games taken by a Ticket Holder cannot be used for any purpose other than for private and domestic purposes ...
