Crikey :: Fining newspapers or forcing them to publish a right of reply when they are found to have breached standards would be a fundamental attack on free speech, according to News Limited’s editorial chief. Australia - News Ltd. newspapers reject carbon tax criticism. In control of public opinion?

A question of market dominance: News Ltd. - How much access do Australian citizens have "to a satisfactory range of perspectives on important issues, e.g. carbon price policy?"

The Australian :: A former Fairfax journalist undertaking research funded by the Australian Conservation Foundation has criticised News Ltd. newspapers for being overly negative towards the Gillard government's carbon price policy. The print media's coverage of the legislation, widely condemned by sectors of the business community and consumer groups, has been analysed by journalist turned academic Wendy Bacon of the Australian Centre for Independent Journalism. Using a team of students to analyse almost 4000 articles, Bacon has concluded that News Limited newspapers, including The Australian, had "campaigned" against the policy rather than providing reasonable coverage for readers.
