WSJ's #WorldStream: An internal video-filing app goes public

Niemanlab :: While WorldStream aims to be a way for viewers to get a potpourri of fresh video content, it is first and foremost an internal newsroom tool that the Journal has opted to make public. Alan Murray, deputy managing editor and executive editor for the newspaper online, says he had long been looking for a way to, er, streamline the filing process for video.

Bit.ly (via email) :: We added a few improvements to rt.ly (bit.ly's real-time service) in the last week. For example, you can now do high-resolution location queries down to the city level, like “show me all of the stories about food that are being clicked statistically disproportionately in Brooklyn?” We also added pagination, so you can see the full set of results that match a particular query.

Digg relaunch next week will draw from Realtime

VentureBeat :: When the social news tool Digg relaunches next week — Wednesday to be exact — it will get help from a new product called Realtime, a search engine that surfaces links being shared the most across the Web. I pinged John Borthwick, chief executive of Betaworks, which now owns Digg, and which also owns a large stake in Bitly. He confirmed that Digg will be drawing on Bitly’s intelligence, including from Realtime.

They are probably quite aware of Twitter (using it to tweet live) but obviously they don't really know how to utilize it.

Faster than real-time: When apps predict your next move

CNN :: "We've arrived in the future," Loic Le Meur told me. Online apps are getting to know us so intimately, he explained, that we can know things before they happen. To illustrate his point, Le Meur told me about his use of Highlight (App Store link), a social location app which offers illuminating data about nearby people who have signed up for the network like -- you guessed it -- the digitally omniscient Robert Scoble. Highlight enabled Le Meur to literally know the future before it happened because, he says, it is measuring our location all of the time. "I opened the door before he was there because I knew he was coming," Le Meur told me excitedly about a recent meeting that he had in the real world with Scoble.

Real-time messaging startup PubNub introduces Pulse to facilitate one-to-one communications

TechCrunch :: As developers add more interactivity to their apps, PubNub has emerged with a platform for sending out real-time messages and notifications without investing heavily in the infrastructure needed to support it. While it has historically been focused on one-to-many notifications, the latest product from the startup, PubNub Pulse, will allow developers to add persistent connections between users.

Twitter: Studying rapidly evolving user interests

Twitter Engineering :: Twitter is an amazing real-time information dissemination platform. We've seen events of historical importance such as the Arab Spring unfold via Tweets. We even know that Twitter is faster than earthquakes! However, can we more scientifically characterize the real-time nature of Twitter?

One way to measure the dynamics of a content system is to test how quickly the distribution of terms and phrases appearing in it changes. A recent study we've done does exactly this: looking at terms and phrases in Tweets and in real-time search queries.

Geofeedia helps journalists locate real-time photos, tweets where news breaks

Poynter :: In breaking news situations, reporters often rely on text searches — names of places, keywords like “crash” or “fire,” and hashtags. They look for users whose bios mention a particular location. But it’s hit-or-miss. Even when they use the right terms, they have to wade through all the conversation from people who aren’t at the scene. Geofeedia, a service that comes out of private beta today, aims to solve this problem by enabling location-based searches for social media content.
