Sina Weibo even censors its own posts on its microblog

The Next Web :: Part of the reason that Sina Weibo, the Chinese equivalent to Twitter, has been allowed to become so widespread is its willingness to appease the government by actively censoring posts. Apparently, the company is even willing to censor its own messages.

Sina Weibo censoring photos, searches for Hong Kong?

Tech In Asia :: In a development that we’re sure is totally unrelated to the utterly massive anti-government protests in Hong Kong during yesterday’s handover anniversary, Sina Weibo seems to have gotten very weird about Hong Kong.

Today, Sina.com blocks Hong Kong users sharing photos on Weibo. Any posts containing photos will be shown to yourself only!

Well that was fast: New York Times' Sina Weibo account now suspended

Tech In Asia :: Remember how we reported on the New York Times having joined Sina Weibo, China’s Twitter-like social network, yesterday? Well, the New York Times‘ Weibo has been suspended already, less than 24 hours after its launch, with no clear reason for this having happened. As for the brand-new NYT Chinese edition of its news site, which went online this morning, that’s still unblocked and working fine in China – albeit quite slowly, since it has overseas servers, not ones based in mainland China.

cn.nytimes.com: New York Times joins Weibo

Tech In Asia :: The New York Times, the august newspaper turned digital media company, is venturing onto brave new territory tomorrow with the launch of the Chinese version of its website. It’ll be online at cn.nytimes.com, which is currently blank and inaccessible behind a login. To mark the event, the New York Times has just joined Sina Weibo, China’s hottest Twitter-esque site, with the official account pictured above.
